Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's softball team lost to #14 Texas Woman's, 6-5 in extra innings on Sunday afternoon at Diane Daniels Field. The Hilltoppers were set to score the tying run in the bottom of the eighth inning, but a questionable interference call against
LAUREN BRODE decided the game. St. Edward's went 3-2 in the 2014 Hilltopper Classic and is now 9-6 overall on the year.
The Hilltoppers scored four runs in the second inning.
CAITIE CARNEY walked to get on first.
FAITH ROBERTS doubled to left center to advance Carney to third base.
GABRIELA MACIAS pinch ran for Roberts. A double to left center by
EMILY MAYFIELD scored Macias and Carney. Next, Brode reached on a fielder's choice while E. Mayfield advanced to third and then would score on a throwing error by the Texas Woman's third baseman. Brode would score on a sacrifice fly out to left field by Bogart.
Texas Woman's cut the lead to 4-2 in the third inning. Farquhar scored off a single to left field by Bailey Vrazel.
SARAH DEBROW (5-4) walked Hines with the bases loaded to score Ruiz. Texas Woman's tied the score at 4-4 in the fourth inning. Farquhar and Shirley scored off a double to right center by Vrazel.
St. Edward's made it 5-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Hilltoppers loaded the bases with
KP PERCH, Bogart, and Ervin.
KENDALL LUCAS walked to bring home Perch.
Texas Woman's tied the score again at 5-5 in the fifth inning. Sarah Whittenburg scored off a single up the middle by Amanda Shirley. The game went to extra innings after no runs were scored in the sixth and seventh innings.
Texas Woman's started the eighth inning with Farquhar placed on second base. Ruiz bunted to third base for a single. Sancet singled to left field to score Farquhar to give Texas Woman's a 6-5 lead.
Brode was placed on second base at the start of the bottom of the eighth inning.
KP PERCH flied out to left field and Bogart grounded out to the shortstop for the first two outs.
CYDNEY ERVIN sent a grounder in the direction of the Texas Woman's shortstop, Bailey Vrazel. Brode, running from second to third, collided with Vrazel as she made a helpless attempt at the line drive. The umpire called interference on Brode for the final third out even though the collision occurred on a would-be single from Ervin.
St. Edward's returns to action on Wednesday for a doubleheader against Texas A&M-Kingsville. First pitch is set for 1:30 pm at Diane Daniels Field. Live video and stats will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
