Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The St. Edward's softball team won both of its games Monday as the St. Mary's DII Classic came to an end. First, the Hilltoppers beat #10 SE Oklahoma State, 4-2. Then, St. Edward's beat Texas A&M–Kingsville, 3-1. The Hilltoppers leave the tournament with a 3-2 record and a two-game winning streak. The 3-2 record was good enough to tie for first place with St. Mary's, SE Oklahoma State, Texas A&M-International, Texas Woman's. The Rattlers and Hilltoppers tied with a 2-1 record in games involving the tied teams.
St. Edward's (3-2) beat #10 SE Oklahoma State, 4-2 in the first game of the day. The Hilltoppers scored two runs in the first inning.
KENDALL LUCAS got things going with a single to the left side and she proceeded to steal second base.
LAUREN BRODE's single to center field advanced Lucas to third base. A single to center field by
KP PERCH brought home Lucas and Brode.
St. Edward's added another run in the second inning when freshman
ALEX MAYFIELD homered inside the park to push the lead to 3-0. The Hilltoppers would load the bases later in the inning, but would leave all three runners on when Brode was tagged out at second base.
SE Oklahoma State added a run in the fourth inning when Laramie Beal doubled to center field to bring home Shaina Crites. The Savage Storm added another run in the fifth inning when Jessica Simmons scored an unearned run off a bunt by Lacie Cook.
The Hilltoppers made it 4-2 in the sixth inning.
EMILY MAYFIELD singled through the right side to score
CYDNEY ERVIN. SE Oklahoma State made an effort to tie the game in the seventh inning. The Savage Storm had runners on second and third, but pitcher
KATELYN KLUG was able to get Courtney Riddle to ground out to Lucas at shortstop. Klug struck out three batters on her way to a 2-0 record.
"We did a great job of setting the tone for the day by scoring two runs in the first inning of the game," said Coach
Lindsay Gardner. "We came in confident in our swings, our pitching was on point and we played fundamental defense."
Next, St. Edward's beat Texas A&M–Kingsville, 3-1. The Hilltoppers scored two runs in the third inning.
ALEX MAYFIELD singled on a bunt, but was able to advance to third base due to an error by the third baseman.
ALEX MAYFIELD was brought home off a single by Olson. A triple by Lucas down the right field line brought home Olson to extend the lead to 2-0. Texas A&M–Kingsville scored one run in the third inning to cut the lead to 2-1. Cortnee White scored an unearned run off a single by Adela Gomez.
The Hilltoppers made it 3-1 in the seventh inning when
ALEX MAYFIELD bunted a single to bring home Ervin. Ervin, Lucas, and
ALEX MAYFIELD each had two hits in the game. "Timely hitting was key on offense," said Coach Gardner. "I'm very proud of the girls. They continued to get better every play of every game."
SARAH DEBROW struck out six batters in a complete game's work. "Debrow did a great job hitting her spots," said Coach Gardner.
Debrow and Klug both were named to the All-Tournament Team. Klug was a perfect 2-0 on the weekend with a 0.88 ERA. Debrow completed three games during the tourney and struk out 21 batters in 21.0 innings of work.
St. Edward's will next take part in the Charger Chillout taking place in Hunstville, Ala. from February 7-9. The Hilltoppers will face Southern Indiana at 12 p.m. and then face West Georgia at 2 p.m.
