Hilltoppers bounce back with 9-0 win over Incarnate Word

Box Score SPRING BRANCH, Texas – The St. Edward's softball team bounced back on Tuesday evening with a 9-0 win over Incarnate Word. The game was moved to Smithson Valley High School because of poor field conditions at Incarnate Word's field. The Hilltoppers were led by strong hitting performances by BREAH WHITTEN and CAITIE CARNEY. Whitten accounted for three RBI for while Carney added two RBI of her own.
 
St. Edward's (18-10) scored two runs in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. MARISA BOGART started things off with a single down the left field line and would advance to second off a sacrifice bunt by EMILY MAYFIELD. Next, KACI OLSON bunted for a single to advance Bogart to third, while Olson advanced to second on the throw. Whitten hit a sacrifice fly to score Bogart, and Olson would score off a throwing error by the left fielder.
 
The Hilltoppers added five runs in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 7-0. KENDALL LUCAS began the inning with a triple to left field. FAITH ROBERTS hit a triple to left center to score Lucas. Roberts would score off a sacrifice fly by Bogart to make it 4-0. Next, E. Mayfield doubled to left field to score Carney.
 
Incarnate Word changed pitchers in the fourth inning, as Whitney Waltrip would pitch the rest of the way. E. Mayfield advanced to third off a wild pitch by Waltrip. Olson then walked and proceed to steal second. Next, Whitten doubled to left field to score E. Mayfield and Olson.
 
St. Edward's added two more runs in the fifth inning to take a 9-0 lead. Lucas walked and advanced to second off a groundout by LAUREN BRODE. Lucas advanced to third on a passed ball. Then, Carney hit a two-run homer to centerfield. This was Carney's third home run of the year.
 
The game was called after five innings on account of a run-rule. SARAH DEBROW struck out six batters and improves to 10-6 on the season. "Sarah through an amazing game from the mound," said Hilltopper head coach Lindsay Gardner.
 
"Tonight was a fun game to watch the girls play," said Coach Gardner. "They came out firing on all cylinders. Our hitters made excellent adjustments early on in the game and utilized gap shots."
 
Coach Gardener pointed out that the team's "excellent base running" allowed the team to score nine runs and to score in three of the five innings. "The defense played confidently and we look forward to playing two more games tomorrow," said Coach Gardener.
 
St. Edward's will resume action tomorrow for a doubleheader matchup against Incarnate Word. The games have been moved to Diane Daniels Field on the campus of St. Edward's because of poor field conditions at Incarnate Word. Live stats will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
