KENDALL LUCAS accounted for six RBIs as the St. Edward's softball team swept its doubleheader matchup against Oklahoma Panhandle State. The Hilltoppers won the first game 8-3 behind 13 hits. St. Edward's (21-11) won game two 4-3 as Lucas chipped in three RBIs in each game.
In game one, the Hilltoppers put two runs on the board in the first inning.
BREAH WHITTEN singled and advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt by
CYDNEY ERVIN. Lucas doubled to score Whitten. Next,
FAITH ROBERTS doubled to score Lucas and to give St. Edward's a 2-0 lead.
The Hilltoppers added a run in the second inning to extend the lead to 3-0.
EMILY MAYFIELD singled and proceeded to steal second. Whitten singled to score E. Mayfield. In the third inning, St. Edward's made it 4-0 when Lucas scored off a sacrifice fly by
LAUREN BRODE.
Oklahoma Panhandle State scored one run in the third inning to cut the lead to 4-1. A. Barbosa doubled to score S. Galindo.
The Hilltoppers added four more runs in the fourth inning to push the lead to 8-1.
KACI OLSON walked and proceeded to steal second. After a walk by Ervin, Lucas doubled to score Olson and Ervin. Next, Roberts homered to score Lucas. This was Roberts' team-best fifth homer of the year.
Panhandle State cut the lead to 8-3 in the fourth inning. R Thompson scored on a play that A. Duinn reached due to an error by pitcher
SARAH DEBROW. Galindo singled to center field where an error by Ervin allowed Duinn to score.
Debrow forced Panhandle State to go in order in the seventh inning. Debrow struck out seven batters and improves to 11-7.
In game two, St. Edward's took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when a single to left field by Lucas scored Whitten.
Panhandle State scored two runs in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Aggies loaded the bases with no outs. First, a single to second base by Dunn scored Spurgin. Next, Arledge scored off a single to left field by Heathington.
St. Edward's came close to scoring in several innings, including in the second inning when the Hilltoppers left three runners on. The sixth inning saw St. Edward's put up two hits and nearly bring a runner home.
GABRIELA MACIAS, pinch running for
CAITIE CARNEY, was on second when E. Mayfield singled to center field. Macias tried to cross home but was tagged out at the plate.
The Hilltoppers would come through with three runs in the seventh inning to win, 4-3.
MARISA BOGART walked and was replaced by Ervin as a pinch runner. Facing two outs, Whitten singled to advance Ervin. Whitten and Ervin each advanced on a passed ball. Then, Lucas connected on a double to score both runners and to tie the game at 3-3. Next, Roberts doubled to score Lucas.
KATELYN KLUG forced Panhandle State to go in order in the seventh inning to secure the 4-3 win. Klug struck out three batters and improves to 10-4 on the year.
St. Edward's will resume action on Saturday for the third game against Oklahoma Panhandle State in Goodwell, Okla. First pitch is set for12:00 p.m.
