Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's softball team split its doubleheader matchup against Newman on Saturday afternoon. The Hilltoppers took the first game 6-5 behind home runs from
MARISA BOGART and
KENDALL LUCAS. St. Edward's (13-9) left five runners on base in game two and lost the afternoon contest, 3-2.
In game one, the Hilltoppers put the first run on the board in the second inning.
CAITIE CARNEY doubled to left field. Next,
LAUREN BRODE singled to center field while Carney beat the throw home to give St. Edward's a 1-0 lead.
The Hilltoppers pushed the lead to 3-0 in the third inning.
CYDNEY ERVIN was hit by a pitch and took first base. Ervin advanced to second off freshman
BREAH WHITTEN's single through the right side. Next, Lucas reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop, but Ervin was tagged out at third base. A double to the gap in left center by
FAITH ROBERTS scored Lucas and Whitten.
St. Edward's made it 4-1 in the fourth inning when Bogart homered to left center. This was Bogart's first home run of the season.
The Hilltoppers extended the lead to 6-1 in the fifth inning. Whitten singled to right field and was brought home by a homer down the left field line by Lucas. This was also Lucas' first home run this season.
Newman made a comeback effort in the seventh inning. The Jets scored four runs to cut the lead to 6-5. With two runners on, pitcher
KATELYN KLUG forced Jensen Cromer to fly out to left field for the final out. Klug improves to 6-3 with the win.
SARAH DEBROW had a rough start to game two, allowing three runs in the first inning. Newman's Medberry scored off a double to left center by Jones. A single to second by Swanson scored Jones. Swanson scored off a single to left center.
The Hilltoppers cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the first inning. Ervin reached on a throwing error by the catcher and advanced to second on the play. A single to left center by Roberts brought home Ervin. Roberts had a team-best four RBIs on the day.
St. Edward's had an opportunity to score in the fifth inning with two runners on. With
EMILY MAYFIELD on third and Ervin on second, Whitten and Lucas were unable to bring any of the runners home.
The Hilltoppers decreased the lead to 3-2 in the sixth inning when Roberts homered to left field. St. Edward's could not complete the comeback effort in the seventh inning. The Hilltoppers finished game two with just four hits.
Debrow struck out 10 batters in the loss, but dropped to 7-6 on the year.
St. Edward's will resume action on Monday when they host Calumet College for a doubleheader. Games at Diane Daniels Field will begin at 1:30 p.m. Live video and stats will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
