Faith Roberts hits two homeruns as Hilltoppers fall to Rogers State

Box Score CLAREMORE, Okla. – FAITH ROBERTS recorded two homeruns and four RBI during Friday's doubleheader against Rogers State. The Hilltoppers dropped both games to the Hillcats and dropped to 22-13 overall and 7-4 in Heartland Conference play.
 
Rogers State jumped on St. Edward's early in game one with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. A two-run homerun gave the Hillcats the early 2-0 lead. The Hilltoppers responded with three runs during the top of the second inning. LAUREN BRODE got the bats going with a lead off single.
 
Brode scored her run after EMILY MAYFIELD singled down the left field line. Mayfield scored the second run courtesy of a sacrifice bunt by CYDNEY ERVIN. Bogart scored the final run of the inning when BREAH WHITTEN flied out to left field. St. Edward's led 3-2 going into the bottom of the second inning.
 
St. Edward's added two runs to its lead in the third inning. KENDALL LUCAS reached on a leadoff single down the left field line. Roberts drove her home with a homerun to centerfield. The Hilltoppers had three hits and left two on base for the remainder of the inning and had a comfortable 5-2 lead.
 
Rogers State regained the lead with a four-run third inning. The Hillcats scored their four runs on three hits and two errors committed by St. Edward's.  Rogers State had another big inning with three runs in the fourth, pushing its lead to 9-5.
 
The Hilltoppers scored two runs in the sixth inning to trim the lead to 10-7. Roberts hit her second long ball in the game to score the two runs. KACI OLSON was on base when Roberts hit the homerun. She reached on a single up the middle.
 
The Hillcats added three insurance runs in the sixth inning increasing their lead to 13-7. The Hilltoppers had one final opportunity to extend the game in the seventh inning, but their efforts fell short and dropped game one to the Hillcats, 13-7.
 
St. Edward's had a chance to get on the board early to start game two, but BREAH WHITTEN was left stranded on base. The same trend followed for the second inning as the Hilltoppers left a runner stranded on base.
 
The Hillcats scored two runs on three hits in the second inning taking the initial 2-0 lead. Whitten got on base again in the third inning, but a strikeout by Olson and a pop up by Lucas ended the inning.
 
CAITIE CARNEY did a good job of holding the Rogers State hitters at bay. She only allowed two hits through the next two innings to keep St. Edward's within striking distance.
 
The Hilltoppers were able to get to the Hillcat pitching staff with four hits between the fourth and fifth innings, but the trend of leaving runners stranded continued. During both innings, St. Edward's had runners in scoring position, but failed to capitalize.
 
The Hillcats scored their final two runs in fifth and sixth inning to push their lead to 4-0. St. Edward's had one final push, but struggled to bring runners in and would fall to Rogers State, 4-0.
 
During the two games, the Hilltoppers recorded 18 hits and left 21 runners on base. The pitching combination of KATELYN KLUG and CAITIE CARNEY tallied 15 strikeouts collectively. BREAH WHITTEN led St. Edward's with four hits on the evening.
 
St. Edward's will return to action tomorrow for the final matchup of the conference series against Rogers State in Claremore, Okla. Games time is set for 2:00 pm. Live video and stats are available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
