Sixth inning rally lifts Hilltoppers past Lubbock Christian, 3-2

Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – Five hits in the sixth inning propelled the Hilltoppers to a 3-2 victory against Lubbock Christian in comeback fashion on Friday afternoon. St. Edward's improves to 23-14 overall and 8-5 in Heartland Conference play.
 
The Lady Chaps got on the board first during the second inning of play. The lead off batter drilled the fourth pitch of the count over the left field fence for the solo homerun. Lubbock Christian mustered two additional hits in the inning, but the Hilltopper defense didn't allow any more damage to occur.
 
After St. Edward's went three-up, three-down in the second inning, the Lady Chaps added another run to the board. Megan Sullivan dialed up a similar solo shot to left field to extend the lead, 2-0. The Hilltopper defensive stepped up again not to allow additional runs to score.
 
BREAH WHITTEN had a one out double to left field for St. Edward's in the third inning. The Hilltoppers were unable to bring her home and left her stranded in scoring position. Lubbock Christian had a lead off single to start the fourth inning, but pitcher KATELYN KLUG did not allow another hit for the inning. CYDNEY ERVIN ended the inning with a spectacular diving catch to prevent the lone runner from scoring.
 
KENDALL LUCAS and CAITIE CARNEY both had hits during the fourth inning, but neither could advance into scoring position. At this point, the game was delayed for 30 minutes due to lightning in the area.
 
The defensive intensity continued after the weather delay as St. Edward's only allowed three hits over the next two innings.
 
KACI OLSON and Lucas led off the sixth inning with consecutive singles. SAMANTHA GILMORE came in as a pinch hitter and laid down the sacrifice bunt to advance the runners into scoring position. Olson stole home for St. Edward's, to cut the lead, 2-1. CAITIE CARNEY then singled and advanced to second on a throwing error.
 
EMILY MAYFIELD got the fourth hit of the inning with a single to shallow center field, but both runners were held up and couldn't advance. LAUREN BRODE doubled to left field and both runners scored to give St. Edward's the lead, 3-2. Klug completed the game in the seventh inning not allowing any hits.
 
Carney, Lucas, and Olson all had two hits during the game. Klug improved to 12-6 with a complete game. She struck out three batters and threw 121 pitches in seven innings of work.
 
St. Edward's will be back in action tomorrow for a double-header against Lubbock Christian. The first game is set for 12:00 noon at Diane Daniels Field on the St. Edward's campus. Live stats and video will be available through the Hilltopper athletic website.
