Hilltoppers “walkoff” with sweep of UT-Permian Basin

Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's softball team swept its double-header matchup against UT-Permian-Basin on Friday afternoon in dramatic fashion. The Hilltoppers won the first game 5-2, with all five runs coming in the first inning. St. Edward's (17-9) won game two, 2-1, behind a clutch walk-off hit by KENDALL LUCAS in the bottom of the seventh inning.
 
In game one, the Hilltoppers put five runs on the board in the first inning. BREAH WHITTEN walked and proceeded to steal second. Whitten advanced to third off CYDNEY ERVIN's bunt that was good for a double, as nobody was covering second base. Next, Lucas bunted to third base for a single to score Whitten. During the next at bat, Ervin caught the Falcons napping when she stole home to give St. Edward's a 2-0 lead.
 
Still in the first inning, CAITIE CARNEY walked and Lucas advanced to third on a wild pitch. Next, EMILY MAYFIELD doubled down the left field line to score Lucas. Carney would score off a single down the left field line by SAMANTHA GILMORE. A single to left field by KACI OLSON scored E. Mayfield to put the Hilltoppers up 5-0.
 
UT-Permian Basin scored two runs in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 5-2. Jennifer Quam scored off a sacrifice bunt by Nikki Brailsford. A single through the left side by Anna Hollingsworth scored Brailsford.
 
The Falcons put two runners on in the seventh inning in a comeback effort. Hollingsworth singled up the middle to advance Miley McKee to second. Next, McKee advanced to third when Holly Herrington sent a ground out to Carney at first base. Pitcher KATELYN KLUG forced Banks to ground out to shortstop for the final out.
 
Klug tallied four strikeouts and improved to 8-3. 
 
In game two, St. Edward's put two runners on in the first inning, but was unable to capitalize. Ervin reached on a fielding error by the shortstop and Lucas singled to second base. Ervin and Lucas successfully performed a double steal as each advanced a base. Ervin tried to steal home on the same play, but this time was thrown out by the shortstop.
 
UT-Permian Basin took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Herrington singled to right field and Burks singled up the middle. Goana replaced Herrington as a pinch runner and was brought home when Quam reached on a fielding error by left fielder E. Mayfield.
 
The Hilltoppers tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning. Ervin singled and advanced to second a throwing error by the first baseman. Ervin was quick enough to score off an infield single to second base by Lucas.
 
St. Edward's would come up big in the seventh inning with four hits and the game-winning run. First, LAUREN BRODE singled down the left field line. Olson singled to shortstop to advance Brode to second. Whitten singled to third base to advance Olson and Brode. After a lineout by MARISA BOGART, Lucas hit a walk-off single through the left side to score Brode and to give the Hilltoppers a 2-1 walkoff win.
 
SARAH DEBROW improves to 9-6 after striking out eight batters.
 
St. Edward's will resume action tomorrow for the third game against UT-Permian Basin. First pitch at Diane Daniels Field is set for 12:00 pm. Live video and stats will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
