Hilltoppers outlast #25 Texas Woman’s in game two; split with Pioneers

Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – KENDALL LUCAS provided a timely homerun for St. Edward's during the second game of its doubleheader split with #25 Texas Woman's Wednesday afternoon. The Hilltoppers lost game one, 3-0, but responded in game two with a 2-1 victory. The Hilltoppers are now 25-19 overall.
 
Texas Woman's (28-14) opened game one with one run in each of the first two innings to take the early 2-0 lead. In the first inning, the Pioneers scored on a sacrifice fly. They got their second run with a solo home run to left field.
 
KENDALL LUCAS drew a two-out walk in the fourth inning to get on base. FAITH ROBERTS doubled to left, helping Lucas advance to third. The Hilltoppers had two runners in scoring position and the leading run was at the plate. A groundout by EMILY MAYFIELD ended the inning for St. Edward's.
 
The Hilltoppers again had a runner in scoring position in the fifth inning. CYDNEY ERVIN reached base with a two-out single to left center. During BREAH WHITTEN's at bat, Ervin stole second, but Whitten lined out to end the inning.
 
The Pioneers added an insurance run in the seventh inning to extend their lead to 3-0. St. Edward's was only able to muster one hit in the final two innings. St. Edward's dropped game one of the doubleheader to the Pioneers, 3-0.
 
Game two was a defensive battle early until the Hilltoppers scored two runs in the second inning. Lucas got things started with a leadoff homerun to deep left field. EMILY MAYFIELD followed with a double to left center. Mayfield stole third and was 60 feet from increasing the lead. CAITIE CARNEY made that happen with a squeeze bunt, giving St. Edward's the 2-0 lead.
 
Texas Woman's answered in the fourth inning by scoring a run. The Hilltopper lead was cut in half, 2-1. The Pioneers scored on a solo homerun to left center.
 
St. Edward's had an opportunity to extend its lead in the fourth inning. Carney got on base with a walk. MARISA BOGART singled to shortstop allowing Carney to get into scoring position. CYDNEY ERVIN grounded into a fielder's choice and ended the inning and the Hilltopper threat, with the score still remaining at 2-1.
 
The Pioneer's attempted to mount a comeback in the sixth inning. The first batter reached on a throwing error. The third Texas Woman's batter singled to third base, now the Pioneers had two runners on with one out. A sacrifice bunt advanced the two runners on to second and third with two outs. SARAH DEBROW got out of the jam with great pitching as she forced the final batter of the inning into a groundout helping to preserve the Hilltopper lead. Debrow secured the game with a perfect seventh inning and St. Edward's beat Texas Woman's, 2-1 in game two.
 
Debrow (12-9) got the win, allowing one run on six hits, while striking out two batters in 7.0 innings of work.
 
St. Edward's will be back in action on Friday as they travel to Laredo, Texas to take on Texas A&M-International. The first game of the doubleheader is set for 1:00 pm at Dustdevil Field on the campus of TAMU-International. Live stats and video will be available through the Dustdevil Athletic Website.
