GAME 2
Down one game in the series, St. Edward's handed the ball to Hilltopper starter,
CAMERON STANTON. The Miners jumped out to an early lead, scoring one run on two hits in the top of the first.
St. Edward's (5-4) quickly answered with a run of its own when J.D. Arrowood hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring
NATE TURNER from third.
The Hilltoppers would pick up two more runs in the second on two hits, one from
WESLEY HARRIS and the other from
JONATHAN DAVIS, making the score 3-1.
The Miners would cut into the deficit in the top of the third on a double to left center, making the score 3-2.
St. Edward's would score again in the third off the bat of
KEVIN MAYO, as the score stood, 4-2.
St. Edward's made a call to its bullpen in the fourth inning, sending in
BRYCE DAVIS to relieve Stanton. Davis went on to be a huge factor in the game, throwing five innings and allowing zero earned runs.
The Hilltoppers would tack on two more runs. One run came in the sixth when
NATE TURNER hit a sacrifice fly to center while another run came in the seventh when
JOSEPH OLSON doubled to left center.
CAM HATCH would get the call in the ninth and complete his job impressively, shutting down the Miner offense. St. Edward's would even the series with a 6-4 victory.
Over the course of the game, St. Edward's tied a school record, turning five double plays. Previously, the feat had only been accomplished twice, once in 2011 and again in 2013.
"Bryce (Davis) was outstanding. We preached to our guys all week about keeping the ball down in the zone and getting ground balls. That is exactly what he did which was great to see and allowed our defense to turn a lot of double plays," head coach Rob Penders stated.
When asked about his team's performance, Penders said, "The first one did not go how we wanted and their kid pitched a heck of a game against us. Fortunately, we were able to come back in the second game and get a win."
St. Edward's will finish out the series against Missouri S&T tomorrow with one game at 1:00 p.m. at Luciana-Hamilton Field. Live coverage can be found on the St. Edward's Athletic Website.
