AUSTIN, Texas – In what was a relatively quiet split between both teams Friday afternoon, #13 St. Edward's and Missouri S&T combined for 26 hits and 19 runs in the rubber match as St. Edward's came away with a 12-7 victory.
St. Edward's (6-4) opened up the first frame with four quick runs.
NATE TURNER reached base on a error and made his way to third via a sacrifice bunt by A.J. Hermanson. Gable Whiteacre hit a sacrifice fly to center to give the Hilltoppers a 1-0 lead. The Hilltoppers extended their lead to 2-0 when Jonathon Davis launched the Keith Coulson offering to the right field wall scoring
KEVIN MAYO and
JOSEPH OLSON to give them a 4-0 lead.
ERIC HESTER started the game strong, but ran into a bit of trouble in the third inning as the Miners put across five runs. Missouri S&T capitalized on a fielding error from the Hilltoppers to push across their fourth run, and a double from Nick Ulrich drove in two more runs. A quick RBI groundout and a single to center brought home two more runs to give the Miners a 5-4 lead.
St. Edward's quickly loaded the bases and really worked a few counts before producing three runs in the top half of the third. Jonathon Davis worked the count full before drawing a walk to bring in their first run of the inning. Wes Harris was greeted by reliever Blake Stephens with four straight balls, bringing in another run and shortly after Hilltopper third baseman
MIKE DAVIS hit a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 7-5.
St. Edward's went back to work in the bottom of the fourth as they pushed three more runs across. Hermanson started the inning off with a bunt single and immediately stole second base. JD Arrowood ripped a single to left to drive in Hermanson. Olson singled up the middle before
KEVIN MAYO ripped a double to score Arrowood. Jonathon Davis grounded out to shortstop but Olson got a terrific jump as he managed to score and push the lead to 10-5.
Both teams traded two runs a piece in the sixth frame and
DALTON BROWN relieved
ERIC HESTER.
DALTON BROWN gave up an inherited runner before working out of a jam to keep the score at 10-7. St. Edward's brought in its two runs by way of an Olson RBI-double and
KEVIN MAYO's groundout that scored Olson, giving the Hilltopper a 12-7 edge.
ERIC HESTER ultimately earned the win today as he fought through 5.1 innings allowing 10 hits, seven runs but only four earned runs.
DALTON BROWN was spectacular in relief as he went 2.2 innings giving up just two hits and one walk.
Arrowood and Olson led the offensive explosion as the two combined for seven hits, seven runs scored and multiple extra base hits. Arrowood finished the day going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and a double. Olson went 3-for-4 with a walk, four runs scored and a double of his own.
