Hilltoppers drop heartbreaker to Newman, 62-61

Senior Day Video

AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's Women's Basketball team lost in gut-wrenching fashion to Newman Saturday afternoon at the Recreation and Convocation Center, 62-61, as Mali Wright's jumper as time expired was good for the Jets.

On a night where the Hilltoppers honored their four seniors: AIMEE DURBIDGE, KATHLEEN BRISBANE, JAIMIE KADLECEK, and TOMORROW HUFF, St. Edward's (15-11, 9-9 HC) got off to a fantastic start, taking a 20-point lead with 6:17 left in the first half.

Newman (10-16, 7-11 HC) would cut into the deficit, shortening the lead to eight at the break.

At the half, SYDNEY THOMAS would lead the Hilltoppers with seven points. KATY BOREN and LEXI FATHEREE would also chip in with six points apiece.

The second half would bring an exciting back-and-forth affair. The Jets would quickly cut into the lead to come within three with 14:50 left to play; however, would not garner a lead until 5:13 left in the game.

The score would even up five times in the game, and the Hilltoppers would eventually take a one-point lead with nine seconds left behind a free throw from Fatheree.

The Jets would get the ball with a half of second on the clock under their own basket. Mali Wright would catch and shoot from the paint to break the hearts of the Hilltopper faithful.

Fatheree led the Hilltoppers with 11 points, while MILEKA LOYDRAKE and Thomas added 10 points each. KHIANI CLARK had a great game off of the bench, registering nine points and eight rebounds.

"This was not the picture perfect senior night ending," head coach J.J. Riehl said. "We just didn't capitalize on our opportunities, and in the end it cost us. Hopefully we will have the opportunity to play another game in the conference tournament."

St. Edward's will be back in action next Friday when they travel to take part in the Heartland Conference Tournament hosted by Arkansas-Fort Smith. It has not yet been determined if the Hilltoppers will be the three or four seed at the time of this release. Please check the Hilltopper Athletic Website for tournament schedule updates. The tournament will feature live video and stats for all games on the Lion Athletic Website.
