Hilltoppers complete sweep of Oklahoma Christian

AUSTIN, Texas - The St. Edward's Softball team swept Oklahoma Christian in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Diane Daniels Field. The sweep gave the Hilltoppers a sweep in their Heartland Conference opening series.

Game 1
St. Edward's (15-8, 3-0 HC) defeated Oklahoma Christian (7-5, 0-3 HC), 4-1, in the first game of the doubleheader. It was a pitcher's duel up until the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Hilltoppers made their move. With LAURA ALVARADO and MARISA BOGART on second and third, BREAH WHITTEN had a sac fly scoring Alvarado with the first run of the game. ALEX MAYFIELD cleaned up as she doubled to left center and registered two RBI's, with CYDNEY ERVIN and Bogart scoring.

KP PERCH widened the gap in the bottom of the sixth as she recorded an RBI to put the Hilltoppers up 4-0. The visitors were held to just one run that came in the top of the seventh, as Jordan Chism doubled to right center allowing Kendra Pierce to score.

KATELYN KLUG was fantastic on the mound, allowing one run off of four hits, while walking one and striking out another. She improves her record to an even 6-6.

Game 2
The Hilltoppers stole game two, 2-1. Looking to avoid the sweep, Oklahoma Christian fought to put more runs on the board in the second game, but Hilltopper pitcher SARAH DEBROW had other plans for the visitors.

The first run of the game came in the top of the fourth inning by the Eagles. It was Pierce who scored her second run on the day. The Hilltoppers responded, evening the score 1-1, in the bottom of the sixth when Alvarado scored her second run of the day off a single from Perch.

For the second time in the series, the game would head to extra inning. In the bottom of the ninth, St. Edward's capitalized on its opportunity to claim the sweep. With two outs, Whitten laced a double down the left field line. ALEX MAYFIELD followed with a walk-off single to centerfield that secure the sweep for the Hilltoppers.

Debrow (8-2) picked up the victory as she went all nine innings, allowing just one run on eight hits, while striking out four batters. After starting the season 1-2, Debrow has rattled off victories in nine of her last 10 decisions to tally a 9-2 record.

Whitten led the Hilltoppers at the plate Saturday, going 4-for-7 with one run scored and one RBI. Both Perch and ALEX MAYFIELD led St. Edward's with two RBI each.

The Hilltoppers will be back in action Tuesday as they take on Texas A&M-Kingsville in Kingsville. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for 4 p.m. Live coverage will be available on the Javelina Athletic Website.
