WICHITA, Kan. – St. Edward's senior
SARAH DEBROW tallied her third-career no-hitter to lead the Hilltoppers to a doubleheader sweep against Newman Saturday afternoon at the NU Softball Field. The Hilltoppers won game one, 9-0, and hung on in game two for a 5-4 victory.
Game 1St. Edward's (25-17, 12-8 HC) started game one off with a bang.
CYDNEY ERVIN reached on a one-out single. After stealing second base, Ervin came around to score on a single by
CAITIE CARNEY. After a ground out,
FAITH ROBERTS homered for a 3-0 Hilltopper lead.
The Hilltoppers started to pour it on down the stretch, with Dufour notching an RBI-single in the third and Carney driving in another run on a sacrifice fly for a 5-0 lead.
In the sixth inning, St. Edward's put up two more runs up on a sacrifice fly from
MARISA BOGART and an RBI-single by
BREAH WHITTEN. Dufour put the finishing touches on the game with a two-run home run in the seventh inning.
Debrow's perfect game bid was broken up in the second inning on a fielding error by the Hilltoppers. She struck out six batters in her brilliant game.
Game 2The second game saw the home team Newman (13-34, 6-14 HC) jump out to a quick 4-0 advantage after the first three innings.
The Hilltoppers came roaring back with two runs in the fourth inning. Carney and Dufour registered back-to-back home runs to cut the lead to 3-2.
Dufour gave St. Edward's the lead with her third home run of the doubleheader. This one was a three-run home run to give the Hilltoppers a 5-4 lead.
After that, Debrow came on to pitch the final three innings and did not give up a hit, while striking out four batters. Debrow's hitless streak has now reached 14.0 innings that includes four innings from her start last week against Rogers State.
Dufour had herself quite the day, going 5-for-8 with three home runs, a double, three runs scored and seven RBI. Carney was also impressive, going 5-for-7 with four RBI.
