Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The St. Edward's Softball team dropped a doubleheader to #7 St. Mary's Friday evening. The Hilltoppers and Rattlers resumed its annual "Battle of the Saints" matchup with the home team taking 1-0 and 10-4 victories.
Game 1The opening contest was a pitching duel, as both
SARAH DEBROW from St. Edward's and Vianna Gutierrez of St. Mary's had things rolling in the circle.
St. Edward's (25-19, 18-4 HC) threatened in the first inning, getting back-to-back singles from
ALEX MAYFIELD and
BREAH WHITTEN. However, they would strand both runners because of a batter's interference and two strikeouts.
St. Mary's (38-9, 12-10 HC) was only able to get three hits off of Debrow the entire game, but all three would come in the second inning. The big hit was a leadoff home run by Gutierrez to put the Rattlers ahead, 1-0. Debrow settled down after the second inning, retiring 12 of the last 13 batters she faced.
The Hilltoppers tried to answer as they put at least one runner on base from the second inning until the fifth inning, but came up empty each time. Gutierrez set the Hilltoppers down in order in the sixth and seventh innings for the victory.
Game 2The nightcap was the exact opposite of the first game, as both team's offensive prowess was on display.
St. Mary's struck for six runs in the first two innings, which included two home runs.
The Hilltoppers countered with two runs in the fourth inning.
EMILY MAYFIELD picked up the first RBI, as she and
MORGAN DUFOUR launched back-to-back doubles.
LAURA ALVARADO drove in Mayfield with a sacrifice three batters later to cut the lead to 6-2.
After St. Mary, got a run back in the bottom of the fifth, E. Mayfield and Dufour were at it again. The duo went back-to-back, but this time it was the long ball. Their two solo shots made it 7-4 Rattlers.
St. Mary's would score three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game away.
ALEX MAYFIELD, Dufour and
EMILY MAYFIELD all registered three hits each during the doubleheader.
The two teams will play the final game of the series on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. in San Antonio. Live video and stats will be available on the Rattler Athletic Website.
