AUSTIN, Texas- The St. Edward's softball team was defeated, 5-1, in game one of its series with Rogers State at Diane Daniels Field Thursday afternoon. Due to lengthy delay to start the game, the doubleheader was shortened to one game and the two teams started a second game that was suspended due to darkness. The second game will pick back up on Friday to start the top of the fifth inning with Rogers State leading, 5-2.
Â
Rogers State (10-22, 6-12 HC) opened up the first inning strong as they recorded two runs. Jamie Kowalick and Carley Conley both scored unearned runs as the Hilltoppers committed a two-base throwing error and a passed ball. The Hillcats struck again in the fifth inning. Malori Moss was first to come home off a single from Kowalick. Kowalick followed with her second run on the day off a double from Conley.
Â
Whitney Hamilton of Rogers State stretched the lead to 5-0 in the sixth inning, homering to left field.
Â
St. Edward's (22-16, 9-7) got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when
CAITIE CARNEY scored off a single up the middle from K.P. Perch. That would be the only Hilltopper run however, as the visitors would hold on to the 5-1 lead.
Â
SARAH DEBROW suffered the loss. Her record on the season now stands at 13-7. Â
Â
As stated, Hilltoppers and Hillcats will resume play Friday with a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. for the suspended game. Live coverage will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.Â
