AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's Softball team used a 12-hit attack for a 9-1 run-rule victory to salvage a split on the final day of a three-game series against Heartland Conference rival Rogers State on Senior Day. The Hillcats won the completion of game two to start the day, 5-2.
Game 1Picking up where the two teams left off on Thursday in the top of the fifth inning, neither team was able to produce any offense for the remainder of the contestz. St. Edward's (23-17, 10-8 HC) had an opportunity in the bottom of the seventh when they had back-to-back singles by
SAMANTHA GILMORE and
LAURA ALVARADO with two outs. The rally would die, and so would the Hilltoppers' chances to win.
Game 2The second game of the day saw the Hilltoppers race out to an early lead, scoring six runs in the first two innings.
CAITIE CARNEY drove in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly to score
BREAH WHITTEN. After
MORGAN DUFOUR drove in
CYDNEY ERVIN with the second run of the game,
EMILY MAYFIELD launched a two-run home run over the fence in left field for a 4-0 lead.
Rogers State (11-23, 7-13 HC) got a run back in the top of the second inning.
In the bottom of the second inning, Dufour drove home Ervin and Mayfield notched her third RBI of the game.
The Hilltoppers would get two more sacrifice flies from Dufour in the fourth and sixth innings. Roberts would end the game with a walk-off double in the sixth for a 9-1 final.
The game was also senior day on the Hilltop, as St. Edward's said goodbye to
