AUSTIN, Texas – The #8-ranked St. Edward's Baseball team took two games from Newman this afternoon to hold its one game lead over St. Mary's in the Heartland Conference standings. The Hilltoppers erased a 2-0 deficit in game one, to win 7-2, and pounded out 16 hits to run-rule the Jets in the nightcap, 15-4.
St. Edward's has now won 10-straight games and 19 of its last 21 games.
GAME 1In the first game of the doubleheader, the Hilltoppers would fall into an early 2-0 hole. It was not until the fourth inning when
J.D. ARROWOOD doubled to left center and
DYLAN WATTS singled that the Hilltoppers would bring the score even.
St. Edward's (37-10, 22-4 HC) would take the lead in the sixth inning off a timely Wes Harris two-run homerun that would put the Hilltoppers ahead of the Newman (22-24, 11-15 HC), 4-2. It was Harris' second home run of the year.
The Hilltoppers would break out their bats from there, scoring three more runs over the duration and cruising to a 7-2 victory over the Jets.
Harris would have a monster game, recording three hits and three RBI in four at-bats to help St. Edward's prevail.
RYAN PULSIFER would also hit his first home run of the year in the seventh inning.
In a must-win game for St. Edward's,
COLLIN SHERROD (8-1) went the distance, throwing 94 pitches in a complete seven-inning affair, allowing only three hits.
Game 2 St. Edward's would continue its late season dominance in game two as they outlasted Newman, 15-4, in eight innings of play at McCarthy Field in Wichita, Kan.
The Hilltoppers got off to an auspicious start as the team garnered a 10-0 lead in the fifth inning. In the bottom of the fifth the Jets would tack on two runs of their own to cut the Hilltopper to eight.
In response, St. Edward's would score five more runs over the next three innings of play to run-rule Newman, 15-4.
KEVIN MAYO and Watts would each tally three hits in the game, combining for a total of seven RBI between the pair.
BRYCE DAVIS (7-1) would throw six innings, allowing four earned runs on nine hits, and striking out five before handing the ball to
ERIC HESTER. Hester would throw two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two batters.
St. Edward's remains one game ahead of St. Mary's with one game left to play in the regular season. The Hilltoppers will finish its series tomorrow against the Jets at 1 p.m. Live coverage will be available through the Jets Athletic Website.
