WICHITA FALLS, Texas – St. Edward's University Women's Tennis crowned three champions on day two of the Midwestern State Invite, while
LAURA GALVAN posted a perfect 8-0 record in singles and doubles.
PAOLA CARPIO also won her singles bracket while Galvan teamed up with
IVANA ZECEVIC to take home a doubles championship as well.
"I'm really happy with how this weekend went. We came out today with a great attitude despite a long day yesterday," said head coach Kendall Brooks. "We had a great showing, winning some really close three-set matches and coming up short in a few. We continue to improve each time we take the court. Marissa is playing great tennis, Paola and Vanessa are finding their games, and Laura was unstoppable, which is impressive for the freshman. Ivana was a warrior this weekend and showed great leadership. I think this was great preparation for next weekend's ITA Regional tournament and we will continue to work this week to be ready."
In addition to a pair of singles champions,
VANESSA CAMARA advanced to the championship match in her bracket, but fell 3-6, 3-1.
ANJALI SAMPATH earned a win in singles as well, pushing her opponent to three sets and coming out on top, 10-5.
ELISA GUILLEN also added a victory in singles, winning 6-2, 6-1.
On day two of doubles play, the Hilltoppers posted a perfect 5-0 record. While Galvan and Zecevic won their bracket, the team of
VALENTINA MARTINEZ and Guillen rolled to a 8-1 victory, and Carpio and Camara also won 8-3.
MARISSA WILLIAMS, teamed with Sampath, also took home a victory by default.
Coach Brooks and her team continue their fall schedule next Friday and Saturday in San Antonio at the regional championships. Fans can follow women's tennis on Facebook, Twitter, and at GoHilltoppers.com
