WICHITA, Kan. – St. Edward's University Volleyball fell to Newman, 3-0, on Thursday night, marking the Hilltopper's first Heartland Conference loss on the road this season.
The attacking trio of
MIKAYLA GRILL,
MADISON MCCLURG, and Katie Hendrix combined for 15 kills to lead the Toppers.
MORGAN BECKHAM returned to the libero position with 11 digs, along with two service aces. The loss drops the Hilltoppers to 4-8 overall and 2-2 in the conference. Newman improves to 9-4 and 3-1.
St. Edward's came out fighting to start game one against the second-place team in the Heartland Conference. However, after tying the score at eight, the Jets would pull away for a 25-16 win, and use that momentum to take game two 25-11.
In game three the Hilltoppers staged a late rally, going on an 8-1 run to pull within two points of the Jets. However a roster filled with experience and an efficient attack would prove too much and Newman would clinch the match, 25-21.
Head coach Mary DeJute and the Hilltoppers continue their three-game road trip with a match against the defending conference champions of UA Fort Smith on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for noon. Fans can access live stats and video at GoHilltoppers.com.
