SAN ANTONIO, Texas – A young St. Edward's Women's Tennis team wrapped up its fall competition on Saturday at the USTA/ITA Regional Competition with eight singles victories and six wins in doubles.
LAURA GALVAN and
ANJALI SAMPATH highlighted the Hilltoppers singles action, both advancing to the round of 16 after winning their first two matches. In doubles a trio of teams won their opener before falling in the second round.
"Even though I don't think we had the results we were looking for, I feel like it was a good weekend for us," said head coach Kendall Brooks. "Anjali and Laura had a good run, but I was disappointed with our doubles results. I felt like we had chances we didn't capitalize on. However, I feel like we gained a lot of experience this fall and I learned a lot about my players. I'm looking forward to getting to work in the offseason to prepare for the spring."
In addition to the success of Galvan and Sampath in singles,
VALENTINA MARTINEZ also won her tournament opener and
MARISSA WILLIAMS provided a pair of wins in consolation play. Galvan's deep run comes following her undefeated weekend at Midwestern State.
The doubles teams that came out with victories included: Sampath and Williams,
IVANA ZECEVIC and Galvan, and the team of
PAOLA CARPIO and
VANESSA CAMARA.
This weekend's tournament marks the end of fall play for coach Brooks and her team. The Hilltoppers will begin conference and dual play in the spring, looking to return to win the Heartland Conference and return to the NCAA Tournament.
