St. Edward’s falls to No. 16 Angelo State

Late free throw gives Rams 91-90 victory over Hilltoppers

AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's gave No. 16 Angelo State all it could handle Saturday before falling to the Rams, 91-90 at the Recreation and Convocation Center.

Angelo State (5-0) got a free throw from Prince Foster with 1.1 seconds remaining to escape with the one-point victory over the Hilltoppers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior JOHN GRAMLICH led the way early with seven points in the first five minutes of play. The outburst gave St. Edward's a 12-8 lead.
  • Angelo State would retake the lead at the 13:43 mark and not relinquish it the rest of the half. Angelo State shot 55 percent from the floor in the first half.
  • Gramlich kept the deficit within six points by scoring 15 first-half points.
  • In the second half, St. Edward's came out hot from 3-point land. The Hilltoppers made four three pointers in the first eight minutes of action. Sophomore JAMES TAYLOR made three of them. That gave St. Edward's a 64-60 lead with 11:55 remaining in the contest.
  • The lead changed hands four times down the stretch as both teams fought hard.
  • Senior RAMIR BURTON's layup with 1:15 remaining gave St. Edward's an 88-87 lead.
  • Three free throws by Angelo State and a pair by Burton in the final minute left the score tied at 90 with 29 seconds left.
  • Pratt was fouled with just over one second on the clock. The Ram forward split the pair of free throws but the Hilltopper heave at the buzzer was well short.

HILLTOPPER NOTES
  • Gramlich led the Hilltoppers with a season high 24 points on 9-of-16 shooting.
  • Taylor followed with 21 points. Burton chipped in with 19 points and senior ETHAN GILBERT added 13 points.
  • St. Edward's forced 21 Ram turnovers and turned them into 31 points.
  • The 13 steals for the Hilltoppers were a season high.
  • Angelo State increases its lead in the series history to 9-2. They have won the last nine meetings.

QUOTE BOARD
"Angelo State is a great team and deserving of its ranking. We had a chance to make some plays and didn't. It was a good scout and game plan but we came up a little short. Hopefully we use this to propel us in the upcoming games before semester break."

St. Edward's continues its four-game homestand Monday with a matchup with Schreiner. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Recreation and Convocation Center. Live video and stats will be available at www.GoHilltoppers.com.
