Box ScoreSAN ANTONIO, Texas – The No. 33 Trinity Tigers put No. 40 St. Edward's Women's Tennis in an early hole, but the Hilltoppers took five out of six singles matches to win their third consecutive match of the spring.
The dominant duo of
IVANA ZECEVIC and
LAURA GALVAN claimed the Hilltoppers lone point in doubles, and remained undefeated this spring at 7-0.
ELISA GUILLEN and
VALENTINA MARTINEZ both improved to 6-1 in singles play. They currently lead the team in wins and winning percentage this season.
With the win, St. Edward's improves to 5-2. The team's only losses have come to No. 2 Tyler Junior College, and NCAA Division I Abilene Christian. Trinity falls to 3-4.
"We had a slow start in doubles today, but I was extremely happy with how we responded in singles," said head coach Kendall Brooks. "The energy and intensity on every court was high, and it really turned the day around. We almost had the singles sweep, including lines seven and eight, but Anjali (Sampath) had a tough match, battling back from a set down. Overall it was a good day for us against a solid Trinity team; especially leading up to a tough three-match week ahead."
Zecevic's and Galvan's 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles gave St. Edward's an early 1-0 lead. However, the Tigers swept lines one and two, 8-3, 8-1, to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles action.
The deficit did not faze the Hilltoppers. Zecevic raced to a 6-3, 6-0 win on line two to tied the match. Then, Galvan,
MARISSA WILLIAMS, Martinez, and Guillen all cruised to straight-set victories. Martinez's match on the fifth line was the match-clinching point, and Sampath nearly came from behind. After losing the first set, the freshman won 6-3, and pushed her opponent to the max in the super tiebreaker, but fell 10-7.
Coach Brooks and her team continue play on Thursday at home against Lewis. The match has been moved to the Austin Tennis Academy. Play is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Live stats will be available at GoHilltoppers.com.
