Box ScoreGEORGETOWN, Texas – St. Edward's Women's Tennis overcame windy conditions, and an early deficit to defeat Southwestern, 7-2 on Saturday afternoon.
The doubles team of
LAURA GALVAN and
IVANA ZECEVIC recorded their 11
th win of the year with an 8-3 win at no. 3. It was the Hilltoppers' only doubles victory of the day. Galvan's impressive freshman season got better as she improved to 8-3 in singles action, taking down Nicole Wilson, 6-1 6-1.
The win improves the Hilltoppers to 2-1 on the season. Southwestern is now 0-1.
"We had a slow start on the day," said head coach Kendall Brooks. "The wind, paired with some tentative play, put us in a small hole early. However, I was really happy with how everyone responded. We came out singles and played much better. Another great match under our belts that we can take and learn from moving forward."
After Zecevic and Galvan started the match with a win, the Hilltoppers suffered two-straight losses at no. 2 and no. 1 doubles to fall behind the Pirates. However, Southwestern's lead did not last long.
Galvan's victory at no. 4 singles tied the match at two, and
ELISA GUILLEN put the visitors up by one with a convincing 6-1 6-1 win over Kali Rose at no. 6.
ANJALI SAMPATH did her part in the no. 1 spot, but it would not be easy. Sampath won the first set 6-4, before falling 6-7 (5-7) in the second. A 6-2 third set would clinch another point for the Hilltoppers.
VALENTINA MARTINEZ clinched a Hilltopper win by taking down Julie Swets, 6-2 6-2 at the no. 5 position, and
MARISSA WILLIAMS finished out the day with her team-leading ninth win.
Coach Brooks and her team return to the court on February 16 against Tyler Junior College in Waco, Texas. The neutral-site match is set to begin at 2 p.m. Fans can follow the team on Twitter at @SEUWomensTennis.
