ANJALI SAMPATH won her sixth match of the season as St. Edward's No. 1 singles player to help clinch a 7-2 win over Nebraska-Kearney Monday afternoon. The Hilltoppers are now on a four-match winning streak.
Sampath's triumph moves the freshman to 6-5 this spring. She also teamed up with
MARISSA WILLIAMS to clinch the duo's fifth win at No. 1 doubles. Another win for
IVANA ZECEVIC and
LAURA GALVAN in doubles keeps the pair undefeated at 13-0.
VALENTINA MARTINEZ also won, and takes over the team lead in singles wins with 12. She has only lost one singles match this season.
St. Edward's is now 10-3 overall and remains undefeated in conference and regional play. Nebraska-Kearney falls to 8-3.
"I thought we played well today. It was nice to get back out and compete again after having a week off," said head coach Kendall Brooks. "We've had a pretty good start to our season, but I know the second half of the season is going to get much more challenging. I wanted us to get back out there, and get back into the groove of competing."
The Hilltoppers opened the contest in dominant fashion with a 3-0 sweep in doubles.
ELISA GUILLEN and Martinez finished first, rolling to an 8-2 victory at No. 2. Zecevic and Galvan followed took No. 3, 8-4, and Sampath and Williams capped off the shutout, 8-4 at No. 1.
In singles, St. Edward's made quick work of clinching the match. Martinez picked her opponent apart, 6-1, 6-3 to take No. 4, and Sampath clinched the victory 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1.
LAURA GALVAN earned her 10
th win of the season by taking No. 2 6-0, 7-5.
The Lopers got on the board with wins at No. 5 and No. 3, but
PAOLA CARPIO stepped in at No. 6 and won 6-4, 6-2 for the final tally.
Coach Brooks and her team return to regional play on Thursday as they travel to Stephenville, Texas to take on Tarleton State. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m.
