STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The St. Edward's Softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Tarleton State Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at the TSU Softball Complex.
Game 1: TSU, 8-0 (5)In the first game, it was all Tarleton State (21-18). The home team put two runs up on the board in the first inning and never looked back. They were able to score eight runs off of nine hits, while holding St. Edward's (17-17) to just three hits.
KACI OLSON,
MORGAN DUFOUR and
SAMANTHA GILMORE each had one hit in the first game for the Hilltoppers.
Game 2: TSU, 9-4Game two was an entirely different ball game. The TexAnns got on the scoreboard in the first inning with a single run.
St. Edward's answered with two runs in the top of the second inning.
KAYLA APPLEBY reached on a one-out single and
SAMI WILLIAMS followed with a walk. A sacrifice bunt by
BREAH WHITTEN moved both runners up a base.
MEGAN HOFFMAN, who is second on the team in RBI, knocked in both runners with a single to center field to give the Hilltoppers a 2-1 advantage.
After Tarleton State wrestled the lead back from St. Edward's with two runs in the second and another in third, the Hilltoppers still had more offense left in the tank. In the fourth inning, Whitten reached on a two-out single. She stole second and Hoffman picked up another RBI with a single up the middle. Hoffman even advanced to second on the throw home, and came around to score herself on a single by
ALEX MAYFIELD to knot the score, 4-4.
The rally was short-lived as the TexAnns batted around in the fifth inning, scoring five runs and putting the game out of reach. The Hilltoppers went in order in the next two innings.
Both Hoffman and Mayfield collected two hits each, while Hoffman drove in three runs.
The Hilltoppers get back to Heartland Conference play this weekend as they take on rival Texas A&M-International in a three-game series. The three-gamer is set to begin with a doubleheader on Friday at 1:00 p.m. They will complete the series with a single game on Saturday at noon. All three games will take place at Dustdevil Softball Field in Laredo, Texas. Live video and stats will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
