EDMOND, Okla. – St. Edward's Women's Tennis ran up against a wall in #16 Northeastern State on the first day of a three-day trip to Oklahoma, falling 7-2 to the RiverHawks.

The 41st-ranked Hilltoppers' two points came at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles by way of default. VALENTINA MARTINEZ marked St. Edward's best hope for a third point, battling her opponent for three sets before falling 11-9 in the super tiebreaker.

After the loss, the Hilltoppers fall to 11-4 on the year, but remain undefeated in regional and conference play. Northeastern State improves to 11-2.

"Northeastern is a good team. Even though they started down, 2-0, it didn't seem to phase them," said head coach Kendall Brooks. "We fought hard, but didn't have what it took today. I felt like we missed capitalizing on some key opportunities on several courts. You can't let those slip away. Overall, I think we are close to having a breakthrough against a ranked team. We just have to keep working. Tomorrow, we will take advantage of the day off before another important match against Central Oklahoma."

After taking the first point in doubles by default, No. 1 and No. 2 went to the RiverHawks, 8-2 and 8-4. Singles proved similar as all matches, except Martinez's, went down in straight sets.

Coach Brooks and her team will take a day off before facing Central Oklahoma, also in Edmond. A full list of matches and results can be found at GoHilltoppers.com.
