Box ScoreAUSTIN, Texas – A rare loss for St. Edward's Women's Tennis came at the hands of Cameron, as the Aggies took down the Hilltoppers, 9-0, on Thursday at the Austin Tennis Academy.
ANJALI SAMPATH faced her fourth nationally-ranked singles opponent of the season, and took four games off of No. 19 Paula Gutierrez. Also,
LAURA GALVAN sits just one win away from becoming St. Edward's single-season leader in doubles victories.
The loss moves St. Edward's to 14-5 with a record of 8-1 in the South Central Region. Cameron improves to 15-2 overall.
"I think it's definitely a testament to them. Cameron is a good team," said head coach Kendall Brooks. "I felt like we had a rough, flat start. We had low energy, and you can't have that against a team like this. We picked it up in singles, but didn't have what it took today to get it done."
The Hilltoppers No. 1 doubles team of Sampath and
MARISSA WILLIAMS gave St. Edward's the best shot at a point to start things off, but could not rally as they fell 8-3. Both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles fell by identical scores of 8-1.
In singles, straight-set victories prevailed for the visiting Aggies. Galvan, the Hilltoppers freshman sensation, pushed the first set of her match to a tiebreaker, but fell 7-5, and then 6-4 in the decider. Momentum continued to elude the home team as they failed to score a point for the first time in over two months.
Coach Brooks and her team will continue running the gauntlet on Friday with a match against 20
th-ranked Midwestern State. The contest will be held at the Strohmeyer Varsity Tennis Courts on the campus of St. Edward's. First serve is set for 9 a.m. with live stats available at GoHilltoppers.com.
