DALLAS, Texas – St. Edward's Women's Tennis's hopes for a Heartland Conference Tournament title were halted by St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon as the Hilltoppers fell to the Rattlers, 5-0.
A Rattler lineup filled with nationally-ranked talent brought the Hilltoppers' title hopes up short. The record-setting duo of
LAURA GALVAN and
IVANA ZECEVIC came within three games of extending their record, but could not pull it out. A total of four singles matches went unfinished as the match was clinched at 5-0.
St. Edward's is now 15-8 overall. St. Mary's improves to 19-3.
"The outcome is obviously not what we wanted, but I couldn't be more proud of this group," said head coach Kendall Brooks. "They did exactly what I asked of them, and fought hard until the very end. The matches were a lot closer than the scores showed, and with five freshmen in the singles lineup, I think we are not that far away. We have had a great year with a very young team. We have a lot to be proud of, and we will see what happens on Tuesday. If it ends here, we will be eager to get back to work next season."
In doubles, the No. 1 team of
ANJALI SAMPATH and
MARISSA WILLIAMS came within three games of upsetting the No. 17 team in country. The No. 2 team of
VALENTINA MARTINEZ and
ELISA GUILLEN came within four games of the No. 22 team, and Galvan and Zecevic came up short, 8-4 as well.
The singles portion of the match was all Rattlers as St. Mary's took the No. 2 and No. 3 matches to clinch the win. When the match was called, Martinez was tied 6-6 in set one at No. 4 singles.
Coach Brooks and her team will await the NCAA's selections for the regional tournament on Tuesday. The Hilltoppers are currently on the border for a postseason bid.
