SAN ANTONIO, Texas – St. Edward's Women's Tennis closed its season against St. Mary's in the NCAA Regional Tournament on Sunday afternoon, falling by a score of 5-0. It was the third meeting between the teams this season.
Despite not finding a win in the postseason, Hilltopper freshman
LAURA GALVAN closes her first year as the all-time single-season doubles wins leader in St. Edward's history. Her partner,
IVANA ZECEVIC finishes her career ranked second in single-season doubles wins. Galvan also went 20-11 in singles while fellow freshman
VALENTINA MARTINEZ finished her rookie campaign with a mark of 19-9.
As a team, the Hilltoppers went 15-9 in the 2015-16 season. St. Mary's will now advance to the Sweet 16 in Denver, Colorado.
"Every time we played St. Mary's we played a little better," said head coach Kendall Brooks. "We had a strong start in doubles today, and I thought we had some chances, especially at No. 2. Unfortunately, I think we lost some momentum with the rain delay. However, that's the way things go. Anjali (Sampath) and Valentina had great days, and overall we did our best to execute. We had a great season, and while it doesn't feel that way today, we still have a lot to be proud of. I love coaching this group, and I think we have a bright future ahead."
In doubles, the Hilltoppers best shot for a point came at No. 2 where Martinez and
ELISA GUILLEN battled their nationally-ranked opponent for each point. However, the duo would fall 8-6. The 3-0 sweep gave the Rattlers momentum heading into singles where they took No. 2 and No. 6 in straight sets for the win.
Coach Brooks graduates just one senior in Zecevic. She will bring back the other five in her starting lineup for the 2016-17 season. Fans can follow the team on social media in the offseason by searching St. Edward's University Women's Tennis.
