PHILDADELPHIA – Former St. Edward's University assistant baseball coach Chris Young was hired by the Philadelphia Phillies last week as their assistant pitching coach under head pitching coach Rick Kranitz.
Young worked on the Hilltoppers' coaching staff from the summer of 2008 through the winter of 2010. He helped SEU to back-to-back, top-four finishes in the Heartland

Conference standings. Young also assisted with the development of Jonathan Burns ('11) who was drafted by the Atlanta Braves as a relief pitcher in the 26th round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
In the winter of 2010, Young left The Hilltop for a position as a scout in the San Diego Padres organization before joining the Houston Astros organization in 2015. He scouted for the Astros from 2015-16 before moving up to scouting supervisor in 2017 as the Astros won their first-ever World Series title.
Prior to St. Edward's, Young played three seasons of college baseball for Mississippi State where he earned Freshman All-America honors and was named the 2001 SEC Tournament MVP. Young was drafted in the 18th round of the 2002 draft by the Colorado Rockies and played seven years of minor league ball.
Young's coaching history also includes roles with Georgetown (Texas) High School, Coast to Coast Athletics and various camps across the country. He holds a Bachelors of Business Administration in marketing from Mississippi State.
