AUSTIN, Texas – Sophomore KAYLA APPLEBY drove in three runs Sunday to lead St. Edward's softball to a 6-2 win over Rogers State in the opening game of a doubleheader. The Hillcats defeated the Hilltoppers in game two, 5-0.
 
St. Edward's (8-15, 1-1 Heartland) erased a 2-1 deficit in game one to win, but Rogers State (17-6, 1-1 Heartland) one-hit the Hilltoppers in game two for a 5-0 shutout victory.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1: St. Edward's 6, Rogers State 2)
W-Slatten (3-6), L-Rosewell (14-4)

• Rogers State pushed across the game's first run in the top of the first inning on a two-out single by Taylor Santistevan.
• St. Edward's answered in the bottom of the first on a RBI-single by junior SAMI WILLIAMS.
• The Hillcats scored an unearned run in the second inning.
• In the third inning, St. Edward's took a 3-2 lead by scoring two runs off of a squeeze bunt.
• Appleby added to the Hilltopper lead with a RBI-double in the fifth inning.
• She capped off the scoring in the sixth inning with a two-RBI single.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2: Rogers State 5, St. Edward's 0)
W-Rosewell (15-4), L-Rex (2-6)

• Starting her second game of the day, Roger State's Megan Rosewell kept the Hilltopper offense in check.
• Sophomore MEGAN HOFFMAN tallied her second double of the doubleheader for the Hilltoppers' only hit.
• The Hillcats scored their five runs off of nine hits.

 
HILLTOPPER NOTES

• Senior LAUREN SLATTEN broke a four-game losing streak in the circle by allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out nine batters.
• The Hilltoppers have won 12 straight Heartland Conference openers.
• Appleby and Hoffman both collected two hits on the day.
• Freshman ASHLEY NASSY went 2-for-3 in game one and reached base by a hit-by-pitch in game two in her fourth and fifth starts of the season.
• Rogers State leads the all-time series, 6-5.

"I was really happy with the way we attacked offensively and had a strong defense in game one. Their pitcher was consistent all day, and in game two we did not make adjustments. Our pitchers need to limit our walks tomorrow. We also need to be able to string together hits to be successful."
