SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Sophomore BETH HAYWARD won her singles match against Point Loma Friday, but St. Edward's women's tennis ended up falling to the Sea Lions, 8-1.
 
Hayward took a 1-6, 6-2, 10-8 decision at No. 4 singles to improve to 5-3 in singles action this spring. The Hilltoppers dropped three tiebreakers in the tough-luck loss.
 
St. Edward's (7-5) has faced five nationally ranked opponents this season. Point Loma (10-5) is 3-1 in its last four matches.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Sea Lions took a 3-0 lead by sweeping all three doubles matches.
• A top-50 matchup between No. 49 ANJALI SAMPATH and No. 25 Nikki Newell at No. 1 singles went to Point Loma to make it 4-0.
• Point Loma clinched the victory by winning No. 2 singles.
• Hayward took the Hilltoppers' lone point in a three-set victory on line four.

 
HILLTOPPER NOTES

• Friday marks the first meeting between St. Edward's and Point Loma.
• Hayward has won three straight singles matches.
• The Hilltoppers have only been shut out once this season.
