AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader Wednesday to No. 1 Angelo State, losing game one, 5-1, and game two, 4-1.
Top-ranked Angelo State (32-2) came into the contest averaging over seven runs per game. St. Edward's (9-19) held the RamBelles to nine combined runs during the doubleheader.
St. Edward's has dropped four straight games after taking 2-of-3 from Rogers State to open Heartland Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1: Angelo State 5, St. Edward's 1)
W-Marlett (15-2), L-Slatten (4-7), S-Hill (3)
- Angelo State starting the scoring in the first inning with two runs off two walks, a hit-by-pitch and a two-out single.
- In the fifth inning, the RamBelles plated two more runs on consecutive squeeze bunts to push the lead to 4-0.
- St. Edward's strung together three hits in the bottom of the sixth to score its lone run of the game.
- Sophomore KAYLA APPLEBY picked up the RBI for the Hilltoppers in the sixth frame.
- Angelo State added an insurance run in the seventh for the final tally.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2: Angelo State 4, St. Edward's 1)
W-Urbany (12-0), L-Rex (2-8)
- Angelo State struck first in the opening frame to take a 1-0 lead.
- Two more runs for the RamBelles on a two-run home run by Taegan Kirk made it 3-0.
- The Hilltoppers fought back, getting an RBI-single in the third inning from senior BREAH WHITTEN to cut the lead to 3-1.
- Freshman ASHLEY NASSY led off the third with a hit-by-pitch and two stolen bases, before coming home to score.
- Angelo State extended its lead to 4-1 with a run in the sixth inning.
- St. Edward's put runners on in both the sixth and seventh innings but came up empty both times.
HILLTOPPER NOTES
- Whitten collected two hits on the day and has a hit in seven of her last nine games.
- Whitten is tied for the team lead with seven multi-hit games.
- Appleby increased her team lead in RBI to 21.
- St. Edward's trails Angelo State in the all-time series, 15-43.
- The RamBelles have won five straight games against the Hilltoppers.
