LUBBOCK, Texas – The St. Edward's softball team's late rally came up short Saturday as the Hilltoppers dropped a 4-2 decision to Lubbock Christian.
With the series loss, St. Edward's (13-23, 6-3 Heartland) falls into a tie for third place in the conference. Lubbock Christian (23-12, 5-4 Heartland) stays one game back of the Hilltoppers in fifth place.
HOW IT HAPPENED
W-Eltsosie (12-4), L-Slatten (6-8)
- Senior ALEX MAYFIELD led off the game with a single to centerfield and later came in to score on a RBI-single by sophomore MEGAN HOFFMAN for a 1-0 St. Edward's lead.
- Lubbock Christian tied the game in the bottom of the first with a run of its own.
- The Lady Chaps took the lead with a run in the second inning, and extended their lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
- Trailing 4-1 in the seventh inning, the Hilltoppers attempted to rally.
- Thanks to a pair of singles and a Lubbock Christian error, St. Edward's plated one run and had runners at second and third with one out.
- A line out by Hoffman and groundout by junior SAMI WILLIAMS ended the threat.
HILLTOPPER NOTES
- Eight different Hilltoppers picked up hits.
- Senior LAUREN SLATTEN notched up her second double-digit strikeout game of the season.
- Mayfield scored both runs for St. Edward's as she led the Hilltoppers with five runs scored in the series.
- Lubbock Christian leads the all-time series, 8-4.
