KINGSVILLE, Texas – The St. Edward's softball team narrowly missed a doubleheader sweep Wednesday when it split with Texas A&M-Kingsville at Hubert Field. The Hilltoppers took game one, 7-4, before falling in the nightcap, 4-3.
St. Edward's (14-24) erased a 4-0 Javelina (19-21) lead in the opener by scoring seven unanswered runs. The Hilltoppers rallied in game two, scoring three runs in their final at-bat, before falling to TAMU-Kingsville, 4-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1: St. Edward's 7, TAMU-Kingsville 4)
W-Halepaska (1-1), L-Clark (2-7)
- TAMU-Kingsville opened the scoring with one run in the first inning.
- The Javelinas tacked on three runs in the second inning, chasing Hilltopper starting pitcher REAGAN CARTER from the game.
- St. Edward's answered quickly, sending nine batters to the plate and pushing across five runs in the third inning.
- MELINA SANCHEZ had the big blow with a two-run double.
- The Hilltoppers picked up two insurance runs in the sixth inning for the final margin.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2: TAMU-Kingsville 4, St. Edward's 3)
W-Gilbert (5-2), L-Burdick (4-5)
- TAMU-Kingsville jumped out to a lead again in the second game.
- The Javelinas plated single runs in the second and fifth innings before taking a commanding 4-0 lead with two more runs in the sixth inning.
- St. Edward's would not go down without a fight.
- After Sanchez drove in a run on a ground ball, freshman KAROLINA RODRIGUEZ launched a two-run home run to left field to cut the lead to one.
- Three-straight groundouts for St. Edward's ended the game.
HILLTOPPER NOTES
- Freshman HANNAH HALEPASKA (1-1) was outstanding, allowing three hits while striking out one batter in five scoreless innings to earn the game-one win.
- Senior ALEX MAYFIELD increased her hitting streak to eight games.
- MEGAN HOFFMAN has reached base in 11-straight games.
- TAMU-Kingsville leads the all-time series, 43-36.
