SAN ANTONIO – St. Edward's women's tennis dropped its regular-season finale Thursday as it fell to 12th-ranked St. Mary's in the annual Battle of the Saints 8-1.
 
BETH HAYWARD scored for the Hilltoppers with a victory on line-three singles over Ally Maciel. Hayward will enter the Heartland Conference Tournament with a perfect 4-0 record in conference play.
 
St. Edward's (11-10, 3-1 Heartland) finishes runner up in the conference regular-season standings. St. Mary's (15-2, 4-0 Heartland) clinches its fifth straight regular-season, Heartland Conference title.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• St. Mary's raced out to a 3-0 lead with victories in all three doubles matches.
• A pair of straight-set victories at No. 2 and No. 6 singles clinched the victory.
• On line three in singles, Hayward battled back after dropping her first set to win, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

 
HILLTOPPER NOTES

• St. Edward's leads the all-time series against St. Mary's, 18-11.
• The Hilltoppers have faced 12 nationally-ranked opponents this season.

However, we just didn't play good enough tennis today to threaten them, so it's definitely disappointing.
