DALLAS, Texas
– The St. Edward's women's tennis season ended Saturday with a 5-2 loss to St. Mary's after a hard-fought battle in the Heartland Conference Tournament Championship.
LAURA GALVAN highlighted the Hilltoppers' finals appearance as she toppled the 27th-ranked singles player in the country in straight sets. Galvan finished her day 2-0 as she won at No. 2 doubles as well.
St. Edward's (12-11) closes the season after making its third-straight trip to the tournament championship. St. Mary's (18-2) claims the Heartland's automatic bid into the NCAA South Central Regional tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- St. Mary's jumped ahead 2-0 in doubles by winning line three and line one.
- Galvan and VALENTINA MARTINEZ put St. Edward's on the board with an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles.
- A Rattlers' win at No. 2 singles put St. Mary's ahead, 3-1.
- Galvan responded in a big way at No. 1 singles, defeating 27th-ranked Clausse-Pujo to pull SEU within one.
- The battle intensified as BETH HAYWARD and Martinez fought their way into third sets.
- St. Mary's ended it with the clincher on line four to claim its fifth-straight title.
HILLTOPPER NOTES
- St. Edward's is 18-12 in the all-time series against St. Mary's after falling to the Rattlers in the regular-season finale as well.
- Galvan holds a combined 4-3 record between doubles and singles in career Heartland Conference Tournament matches.
- The loss for St. Mary's Clausse-Pujo is her first singles defeat in over a month.

The Hilltoppers and coach Brooks graduate no seniors and plan to return all eight players from the 2016-17 roster.
