TEMPE, Ariz. – PAOLA CARPIO and
VALENTINA MARTINEZ were named Scholar-Athletes Tuesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) thanks to their outstanding classroom performance during the 2016-17 school year.

Carpio and Martinez each turned in 2016-17 grade-point averages (GPAs) of 3.50, or better, to earn the award. The sophomore duo serves as two of the Heartland Conference's 16 representatives on the prestigious list.

On the court, Carpio and Martinez combined for 56 wins between singles and doubles. They also helped SEU to the championship match of the 2016-17 Heartland Conference Tournament.

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
