Hilltoppers make noise on first day of national tournament

ROME, Ga. – The St. Edward's men's tennis team had a successful first day of the ITA National Tournament at the Rome Tennis Center.

ANISH SRINIKETH, who is the overall No. 3 seed in the singles draw, rallied from a set down to knock off Indianapolis' Renato Lima in three sets. Sriniketh advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-3 win on Thursday. The Katy native will face off with Alessandro Giuliato from Barry in the quarterfinals at 10:30 a.m. (CT) Friday.

Freshmen duo ABHI RAMIREDDY and JESSE WIKSO continued their run, winning twice on the first day. The pair advanced past their first set of opponents after tournament's No. 3 seed from Valdosta State (Yohan Nguyen and Florian Simbozel) were forced to retire due to an injury. Ramireddy and Wikso won the opening set, 7-6 (1), and held a 3-1 lead in the second frame before the match ended abruptly.

Ramireddy and Wikso then won their quarterfinal matchup in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) against Fabien Calloud and Andrea Zamurri from Northwest Missouri State. The freshmen pair will play the No. 1 overall seed from Columbus State, Matei Avram and Alvaro Regalado at 3 p.m. (CT) Friday.

Meanwhile, Sriniketh and CHASE BARTLETT dropped their first two doubles tilts on Thursday. The duo will take on a doubles team from Delta State, Hugo Stroppiana and Mason Vice, at 3:15 p.m. (CT) Friday.
