AUSTIN, Texas - Big, late innings led to a pair of losses for the Hilltoppers as they fell 7-1 and 7-4 to Colorado School of Mines Saturday.
GAME 1: SEU 1 - CSM 7
Mines took an early lead, scoring three runs in the second inning. SEU seemed poised to get at least one run back in the bottom half of the frame with singles from
JACOB VASQUEZ and
NATHAN MEDRANO with only one out. The Hilltoppers were unable to capitalize, however, and remained scoreless through five innings.
BLAKE HOLUB started off the sixth with a double down the right field line and Vasquez followed with a single through the left side to advance Holub to third who was then brought home on a sacrifice fly by Medrano, cutting the deficit to two, 3-1.
CSM unloaded in the seventh and put the game out of reach, scoring four in the frame to arrive at the 7-1 final.
Mackin led at the plate, going 3-4 while Vasquez added a 2-4 performance.
RYAN HILL suffered the loss, his first of the season.
GAME 2: SEU 4 - CSM 7
St. Edward's started game two well, scoring two runs in the third and fourth innings to lead 4-0 while the starting pitching of
COOPER BAILEY kept the Orediggers off the scoreboard. A five-run sixth inning followed by a two-run seventh gave CSM enough of a lead to steal the win, 7-4.
McPhail posted a pair of triples while going 2-4 from the plate with two runs and one RBI.
CHASE FONTANA went 2-4 with one run scored and Mackin was 2-5 in the game with one run and one RBI. Bailey suffered the loss despite allowing just one earned run in five innings of work, scattering five hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
SEU falls to 7-5 on the season. They remain at home to close the series against Colorado School of Mines on Sunday with a single game. First pitch is set for noon.
