AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's stranded 14 baserunners in a 13-5 loss to Colorado School of Mines to close their four-game series Sunday.
The Orediggers continued their hitting streak in the first inning, posting three runs to open the game. With one out in the second, SEU was poised to make a dent in the deficit with runners at the corners for catcher NATHAN RAMON. Roman's liner to first was right at the glove of Selsor, allowing the double play to end the threat.
Starting pitcher NATHAN MEDRANO and the Hilltopper defense found themselves in a similar situation in the third with runners on the corners and one out. CSM was able to push one across but SEU limited the damage with a 6-4-3 double pay to end the inning.
St. Edward's drew three straight walks to open the bottom half of the third, but Pigati was able to settle in a strikeout the following two batters. With two outs and a full count JAKE HAHN had an eagle eye to draw the walk, bringing home the first Hilltopper run of the game.
The Orediggers tacked on three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to lead 9-1 heading into the bottom half. SEU got back to work at the plate, making the CSM pitching staff work and scored two runs while drawing three walks in the frame to pull within six, 9-3.
Sac fly by JAKE HAHN drove home Blake Holub who led off the sixth inning with a double to right, cutting the lead to five, 9-4. Colorado School of Mines put the final nail in the coffin with four runs in the ninth as SEU was able to only recover one, resulting in the loss.
Holub and CHASE FONTANA both went 2-5 at the plate while Hahn recorded 2 RBI in the loss. Medrano suffered the loss on the mound to fall to 0-2 on the year.
The Hilltoppers drop to 7-6 overall and remain at home to host Texas A&M International on Friday for a double-header beginning at 12:30 pm.
