Game Recap: Baseball |

BATS COME ALIVE AS ‘TOPPERS TAKE TWO OVER TAMIU

AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's Baseball posted 24 runs on 23 hits as the Hilltoppers demolished Texas A&M International 8-3 and 16-10 Friday.

GAME 1: SEU 8 – TAMIU 3

It only took until the second inning for SEU to post a large lead, scoring six runs in the frame, highlighted by a pair of home runs by Jacob Hahn and RYAN MCPHAIL.

ROBBIE LAMMONS led off the inning with a walk and was quickly brought home by Hahn's two-RBI homer to right field. JACOB VASQUEZ was hit and Jimenez singled through the left side to put runners on first and second with two outs. McPhail cleared the bases with a single swing, launching a shot over the fence in left center for a three-RBI bomb. BLAKE HOLUB brought home the final run of the frame, giving himself a comfortable 6-0 lead on the mound heading into the third.

St. Edward's tacked on two more in the fourth while Holub was outstanding on the mound, allowing just five baserunners and no runs through six innings.

With their backs against the wall TAMIU refused to fold and took advantage of an SEU error to setup the first Dustdevil runs of the game. Texas A&M International scored three in seventh before ZACH SCHINDLER snagged Trinidad's liner to first, doubling off Luna to secure the win.

MORGAN ALLEN was the only Hilltopper with multiple hits in the win, going 2-3 from the plate while McPhail went 1-4 with three RBI. Holub earned the win on the mound to improve to 2-1 on the season, scattering five hits with three runs, two earned, with one walk and three strikeouts.

GAME 2: SEU 16 – TAMIU 10

Even though the late game rally came up short for the Dustdevils in game one, it gave them momentum heading into game two, resulting in an early 4-0 lead with three runs in the first and one in the second.

The Hilltoppers got two back in the second on back-to-back sacrifice flies before exploding for five runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to take a commanding 10-4 lead.

SEU's defense and pitching held TAMIU off the scoreboard until the eighth inning where they posted three runs to cut the deficit to three, 10-7. With full confidence, St. Edward's got back to work at the plate to not only answer, but double-up, the Dustdevil effort.

Hahn set the tone with a home run to right field with one out and the rest of the Hilltoppers fed off the energy. Vasquez and Schindler had back-to-back doubles while JAYSON FLORES, Allen and DOMINIC MORACE followed with singles as SEU ended the inning with six runs in the frame to lead 16-7.

Once again, Texas A&M International refused to go quietly and posted three runs in the ninth. The Hilltoppers were able to secure the final outs on a double play again as Hahn made an outstanding catch and got the runner at third after leaving early.

Vasquez led at the plate going 4-5 with three runs and one RBI while Allen posted a 3-4 outing with three runs scored and four RBI.

RYAN HILL secured the win to improve to 3-1 on the year, allowing four runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts in five innings of work.

St. Edward's moves to 9-6 on the year after the wins while TAMIU falls to 6-8. The series wraps up on Saturday with a single game starting at 1 pm.
