AUSTIN – COOPER BAILEY allowed only two runs over six strong innings, and the St. Edward's lineup backed him up with 10 runs on 11 hits in a 10-4 victory over Texas A&M International in the series finale to complete the non-conference sweep on Saturday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
Bailey (2-1), who retired 13 straight batters at one point during his fourth start of the season, improved to 2-1 after he scattered five hits and gave up two first-inning runs.
The Dustdevils (6-10) jumped out to the early advantage behind an RBI single by Jorge Napoles and an run-scoring double off the bat of Obi Obinawa.
The Hilltoppers (10-6) cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first, as
RYAN MCPHAIL started the frame with a triple and then scored on
DYLAN MACKIN's groundout.
St. Edward's took the lead in the second with three runs.
The 'Toppers stretched their advantage in the fifth after sending eight batters to the plate that produced five runs.
JAKE HAHN posted a sacrifice fly that allowed Mackin to score from third base.
MORGAN ALLEN added on a double to the left-center field gap that pushed
JACOB VASQUEZ across the plate.
ZACH SCHINDLER then cleared the bases with a triple down the left-field line.
MATTHEW JIMENEZ capped the panel with a run-scoring hit to right field that allowed Schindler to cross the dish.
St. Edward's tacked on its final run in the sixth, as
BLAKE HOLUB dropped in a single to right field and McPhail, who singled to lead off the inning, scored from third.
Texas A&M International scored single runs in the seventh and eight, respectively, against the Hilltoppers bullpen.
Five St. Edward's hitters finished with two knocks apiece, while Jimenez and Schindler each drove in a pair of runs.
The Hilltoppers will return to action on Tuesday, March 5, as the squad travels to play a single contest at Texas A&M-Kingsville. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Nolan Ryan Field.
