AUSTIN – Lubbock Christian hit four home runs in the first four innings and jumped out to a 9-0 lead en route to a 13-7 victory over St. Edward's in the non-conference series opener on Friday at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
Andrew Pratt hit two homers – a two-run shot in the first inning and a solo round-tripper in the fourth – to pace the Chaps (11-5), who pounded out 16 hits.
Ryan Johnson improved to 5-0 on the mound after holding the Hilltoppers (10-8) to two hits and a run in seven innings of work. The left-hander also fanned seven before handing the ball over to the bullpen.
Johnson kept St. Edward's hitless until
JAKE HAHN placed a single into center field with two outs in the fourth inning.
The Hilltoppers fell behind 12-1 before scoring five runs following a two-out error in the eighth.
Hahn grounded a ball to first base and the throw went wide of the base, which allowed
ROBBIE LAMMONS to score.
MORGAN ALLEN followed with a single that sent both
DYLAN MACKIN and Hahn plateward.
MATTHEW JIMENEZ then tripled down the right-field line and brought Allen around to score.
St. Edward's picked up one in the frame as
ZACH SHEPHERD hit a single through the middle of the infield and drove in Jimenez.
Lubbock Christian tacked on one more run in the top of the ninth to push the advantage to 13-6.
JACOB VASQUEZ produced a run-scoring single in the bottom of the ninth, but the Hilltoppers were unable to pick up any other runs.
TYLER BROWN (1-1) suffered the loss after yielding seven runs on five hits in the first two innings.
St. Edward's picked up seven hits, led by Vasquez's 2 for 5 performance that included an RBI.
The two teams will continue the set on Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
