AUSTIN – The St. Edward's baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Lubbock Christian on Saturday at Lucian-Hamilton Field. The Hilltoppers won the opener 6-3, but the Chaps earned a 10-3 victory in the nightcap.
The two teams will play the final game of the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
GAME ONE RECAP
St. Edward's scored three runs in the first inning and then added solo runs in the final three frames to even the series with Lubbock Christian.
JAKE HAHN started the scoring with a two-run single and
ZACH SHEPHERD produced a sacrifice fly to cap the the three-run first inning.
The Chaps picked up their first run in the third and then scored another solo run in the fourth to pull within one. However,
DYLAN MACKIN hit an infield single in the bottom of the panel and
CHASE FONTANA scored to give the Hilltoppers a 4-2 advantage.
Both teams scratched across a run in the fifth.
Mackin added another run-scoring single to cap the scoring in the sixth.
RYAN HILL (4-1) earned the win on the mound after allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits over 5.2 innings.
JAYSON FLORES entered the game in the seventh and coaxed a double play to end the game. It marked his first save of the season.
GAME TWO RECAP
Lubbock Christian scored seven runs in the second inning and jumped out to a 9-0 lead on its way to a 10-3 win to split the doubleheader.
St. Edward's scored all three of its runs in the fourth.
JACOB JOHNSON put the Hilltoppers on the board with a run-scoring double that plated Mackin. Shepherd continued his strong day with an infield single that brought in Hahn. Johnson also scored on the play after an error by the Chaps defense.
LCU's Chandler Casey (3-2) went the distance to pick up the win. The righty struck out three and scattered six hits.
COOPER BAILEY (2-2) was saddled with the loss after yielding nine runs (eight earned) on six hits over three innings.
