LUBBOCK – St. Edward's was swept in a doubleheader by No. 24 Lubbock Christian to open a Heartland Conference series on Thursday at Hays Field. The Chaparrals won the opening game 10-4 and then held off the Hilltoppers in the nightcap, 3-2.
The two teams will close out the set with a single game at 2 p.m. Friday.
GAME ONE RECAP
Lubbock Christian scored in each of the first four innings, including a five-spot in the second, to claim the opener.
St. Edward's opened the game with a pair of run-scoring singles by
ROBBIE LAMMONS and
MORGAN ALLEN in the first. However, LCU answered with two marks in the bottom of the frame.
The Hilltoppers took a 3-2 lead in the top of the second after
BLAKE HOLUB hit a single through the middle of the infield that brought in
RYAN MCPHAIL.
The Chaps responded again, this time with a five-run panel that gave the hosts the lead for good. Lubbock Christian tacked on one run in the third and two more in the fourth.
St. Edward's picked up an unearned run in the final stanza but was unable to get any closer.
GAME TWO RECAP
Lubbock Christian scored two runs in the opening inning and one more in the fourth, which proved to be enough while holding off St. Edward's in the final five frames.
The Hilltoppers scored their lone runs in the sixth inning.
DYLAN MACKIN drew a one-out walk and then moved over to third base following an error. Holub then hit a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Mackin to cross the plate.
JACOB VASQUEZ followed with a single and then scored when Lammons doubled down the left-field line.
SEU loaded the bases in the seventh, but was unable to get the tying run across the plate.
DANIEL SABATINO (0-3) took the loss in the nightcap, giving up three runs on nine hits over five innings. The right-hander also struck out six and walked one.
BEN MORALEZ threw three scoreless stanzas and struck out five in relief for the Hilltoppers.
