LUBBOCK – Andres Negron hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift No. 24 Lubbock Christian to a 2-1 win over St. Edward's in the Heartland Conference series finale at Hays Field.
The Chaparrals (29-9, 11-1 HC) set up the game-winning hit by getting the first two batters on base with infield singles. After a sacrifice fly and a walk, Negron hit a single to left field that allowed Hill Alexander to score from third base.
The Hilltoppers (16-23, 4-8 HC) attempted to score the go-ahead run in the ninth.
TRENT ROSENAUER hit a single to right field. Alexander made a strong throw to the plate and
MORGAN ALLEN attempted to slide around the tag but was called out, keeping the game tied at 1-1.
Each team received strong pitching performances from their respective starters.
LCU's Chandler Casey worked nine innings and scattered 10 hits while allowing only one run. He also fanned nine and walked one but received a no-decision.
Meanwhile, St. Edward's right-hander
NATHAN MEDRANO struck out 10 and gave up one run on five hits, a walk and a hit batter in eight innings. The only run he allowed was on a sacrifice fly in the second inning.
The Hilltoppers tied the game in the sixth on
BLAKE HOLUB's RBI single.
Neither team was able to score in the next three frames and both teams had runners thrown out at the plate in the ninth.
Lubbock Christian attempted to win the game on Chase Whetsel's one-out single in the ninth. AJ Perez was waived home from second base but
DYLAN MACKIN's throw was in plenty of time and
ROBBIE LAMMONS applied the tag as Perez attempted to leap over the 'Topper catcher.
St. Edward's collected 10 hits in the series finale, as nine different players had at least one.
ZACH SHEPHERD was 2 for 4 to lead the way.
A pair of relievers figured into the final decision. Koi Carrillo (2-0) received the victory after holding the Hilltoppers scoreless in the top of the 10th.
JAYSON FLORES (1-2) took the loss after giving up one run on five hits and a walk in 1.1 frames.
St. Edward's will return to action on Tuesday, April 16, as the road trip continues. The Hilltoppers will play Houston-Victoria in Victoria at 6 p.m.
