No. 3 Angelo State rallies to upend St. Edward's on Tuesday night

SAN ANGELO – Third-ranked Angelo State overcame a 7-1 deficit to upend St. Edward's, 16-10, on Tuesday night at Foster Field.

The Rams (30-7) trailed 10-5 before erupting for nine runs in the seventh inning to overtake the Hilltoppers (16-20). Angelo State added two runs in the eighth to put the contest out of reach.

St. Edward's posted 14 hits on the night, led by JACOB VASQUEZ's 3 for 4 performance. Vasquez had a triple, a solo homer and three RBIs in the loss.

The Hilltoppers took the early advantage with four runs in the opening frame. Vasquez registered a run-scoring single and later crossed the plate on MORGAN ALLEN's infield single. JAKE HAHN drove in two with a single to center field.

The 'Toppers pushed two more across in the second to take a 6-1 lead. BLAKE HOLUB brought in RYAN MCPHAIL on a groundout, while Vasquez followed with a solo homer to left field.

ZACH SHEPHERD pushed across the seventh tally in the third inning on a fielder's choice.

SEU picked up another run in the fifth. Shepherd hit a two-out double ahead of TY MARKEE, who singled to left field. Shepherd was able to score on an error on the play.

Vasquez came through again in the sixth, as he tripled down the left-field line, allowing Holub to score from first base. Vasquez then scored when ROBBIE LAMMONS hit a single to right field.

Angelo State scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull within five. But it was the huge seventh inning that changed the contest. The Rams sent 15 batters to the plate in the decisive inning and recorded seven hits while plating nine runs to take the lead.

St. Edward's will continue its road trip on Thursday against No. 24 Lubbock Christian. The two teams will open the three-game, Heartland Conference series with a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Thursday. The set is slated to finish up at 2 p.m. Friday in Lubbock.
