ODESSA – JACK GRANACK struck out nine batters, but UT Permian Basin managed two runs in the sixth inning to claim the first game of the Lone Star Conference series against St. Edward's, 2-0, Friday afternoon at Roden Field.
The freshman right-hander allowed only two hits in the five-plus inning start. He fanned six hitters in the first two innings of work. However, the Falcons (2-5, 2-5 LSC) put the first two batters on base that he faced in the sixth.
The Hilltoppers (1-6, 1-6 LSC) called in
AG AYALA from the bullpen. After striking out his first hitter, Ayala gave up a two-run double to Jay Desoto that put the hosts in front.
St. Edward's posted 10 hits on the offensive side, but were unable to push any runners across the plate. The 'Toppers had runners in scoring position in six of the nine frames.
DYLAN MACKIN was 3 for 4 with a double to lead the way.
TY MARKEE and
JACOB VASQUEZ both added a pair of knocks.
The two teams will continue the series Saturday with a seven-inning doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
